About the service
If you have experienced symptoms such as heart palpitations, dizziness, chest pain or shortness of breath, your doctor may ask you to undergo a Holter monitor test. You may also be referred for this test if you have a condition that increases your risk for, or is caused by abnormal heart rhythm.
A Holter monitor is a small, wearable device that records your heart rhythm while you go about your normal daily activities. You usually wear a Holter monitor for 24 hours to 48 hours. During that time, the device will record the rhythm of your heart.
Information we need before booking your appointment
We will require your referral from your Doctor and your Medicare Card. Our Admin team will ask you to complete some paperwork, so we have all your important details on file. If you have recently had an ECG (electrocardiogram) please bring along copies of that as well.
Preparation for the test
Do not use moisturising lotion, powders, perfume, aerosol deodorants etc. after your shower.
You will be unable to have X-Rays or scans while wearing the monitor and must avoid electromagnetic fields.
Males may require their chest to be shaved. This can be done prior to their appointment if preferred.
What to expect during the test
Two electrodes (small sticky pads) will be stuck to your chest and then connected to the recorder via wires. The skin will be cleaned with alcohol and gently abraded before applying the electrodes. This is necessary to ensure a good trace is recorded. If the patient has a lot of chest hair, the technician will shave small patches so the electrodes can be adhered directly to the skin. The electrodes and monitor will not be visible under clothing.
It is encouraged that you continue about your normal daily activities so that the monitor can get an accurate reading of your daily heart rhythm.
Time required for appointment
The Holter Monitors take less than 5 minutes to apply.
