Information for Patients
About the scan
Musculoskeletal Intervention can be both diagnostic, as when contrast agents are injected into joints (an Arthrogram) in combination with a CT Scan, or therapeutic, like when performed in conjunction with a joint aspiration or injection in patients with arthritis.
Ultrasound can also be used to guide aspiration or biopsy to help with a diagnosis or for soft tissue injection of painful joints, bursae or tendon related problems (e.g. tennis elbow).
Information we need before booking your appointment
We will require your referral from your Doctor and your Medicare Card. Our Admin team will ask you to complete some paperwork, so we have all your important details on file.
When making your booking, our team will ask you some questions about any allergies you may have, if you are on blood thinners etc. These questions are an initial screening check and will be used to ensure we make your appointment appropriately.
How to prepare before the scan
You will be given all the information about preparation at the time you make your booking.
You will require someone to drive you home after an Interventional procedure. When you arrive, you will be asked to read over and complete some paperwork (information about the procedure and a consent form). Your Radiographer / Sonographer will go over this in detail with you in the examination room.
What to expect during the scan
Our experienced staff will always take the time to explain the procedure to you and answer your questions. Following this, you will be placed in a comfortable position on the bed. For some injections, you may be required to lie on your stomach. Staff will set up a sterile procedure tray for any required equipment and may also perform some planning scans prior to the Radiologist commencing the procedure.
Time to complete the scan
Interventional procedures vary in length significantly depending on the type of injection being performed. Some could be as short as 15 minutes ranging through to almost 1 hour for a lengthy procedure.
What to do after the scan
Depending on the procedure you have, we may get you to stay in the practice for a short period of time following your injection to ensure you are feeling well. Our friendly clinical team members will then direct you back to a change room and on to the Front Reception from where you will be free to leave if you have completed all your examinations.

Our staff will always ensure a safe environment for you and make sure that all necessary precautions are taken.
