Information for Patients
About the scan
An OPG is a panoramic X-Ray unit that is specifically designed to rotate around the patient’s head in order to provide a detailed image. An OPG can be used to demonstrate problems of the upper and lower jaws such as fractures, dislocations, teeth development and dental infection. OPG can also be combined with a Lateral Cephalogram to assess jaw and tooth deformities resulting in bite problems.
Information we need before booking your appointment
We will require your referral from your Doctor and your Medicare Card. Our Admin team will ask you to complete some paperwork, so we have all your important details on file.
For OPG’s only, you do not require an appointment. Please walk-in anytime during opening hours. If you are having an OPG along with another scan (for example a CT scan), an appointment will be required for the other scan.
How to prepare before the scan
You will be asked to remove any jewellery in the area of the OPG (necklace, earrings, hair clips etc.). If you have dentures, the Radiographer may get you to remove these also but will discuss this in the examination room.
What to expect during the scan
You will be standing for this scan with your chin resting on a holder, a bite block between your front teeth and hands holding the handlebars. The machine spins slowly around you (it is not fully enclosed so you can see out the entire time) and captures all the images.
Time to complete the scan
An OPG examination typically takes 5-10 minutes.
What to do after the scan
Our friendly clinical team members will direct you back to the Front Reception from where you will be free to leave if you have completed all your examinations.
At ClinRad our billing is governed by Medicare and the rebates they provide. We Bulk-Bill all Medicare eligible OPG scans. Please ask for a quote when you book your appointment.
